We’re recreating Emilia Clarke’s smoldering look from her Marie Claire UK magazine cover. Keep on reading for product dupes and a step-by-step tutorial.
Thanks to celebrities, we’re never at a loss for beauty inspiration. Whether we’re gawking at their beauty team’s work on the red carpet or swooning over their latest editorial spread, the stars always have a thing or two to teach us about makeup, hair and skincare.
Which is exactly why we keep on coming back to them! In today’s Beauty On A Budget, we’re creating the classic smokey eye look Emilia Clarke wore for her Marie Claire UK July 2015 spread. This look is sophisticated, it’s sexy and it makes for a smokin’ nighttime look.
Let’s get started!

Eyes
Let’s start with the eyes. The products used in this tutorial are Boots No. 7 Stay Perfect Shade & Define Eyeshadow in Cool Mink, Tarte’s Tartelette palette, Chanel Illusion D’Ombre Cream Eyeshadow in Mirifique, Boots No. 7 Stay Perfect Amazing Eye Pencil in Black, Maybelline The Rock Nudes Palette, and Maybelline Eye Studio Color Tattoo Metal in Inked in Pink.
With your Cool Mink eyeshadow pencil, you’re going to apply directly from the bullet onto the lids and lightly brush it over the lid with a brush to get a base going. Also apply the eyeshadow on the lower lash line in a tight line.
Pro Tip: when creating a smokey eye, it’s always best to layer various textures, such as starting with cream and ending with powder eyeshadow.
Then you’re going to take your Tartelette palette, blend Force of Nature with Natural Beauty and apply it to your crease to add definition. Also apply the eyeshadows on the lower lash line. Unfortunately, there is no real dupe for Chanel’s Mirifique eyeshadow as the glitter flecks are so unique in this formula, it’s almost impossible to find anywhere else, but if smokey eyes are your favorite look this eyeshadow is worth splurging over. Take Mirifique and first apply it close to the lash line then drag the color out and upwards to give your eyes an elongated, almond-like shape. When applying the color, lightly dab it and blend while dabbing to blend it seamlessly with Cool Mink.
With your Stay Amazing Eye Pencil, line the water rim of the upper and lower lash line. Take an angled brush and go in between the lashes and wiggle the eyeliner downwards to create an effortless smudgy look. Do the same for the upper lash line: lining and wiggling the product upwards.
With Maybelline The Rock Nudes palette, mix together the matte and shimmery black eyeshadows for added intensity. Apply over the lid to set the cream eyeshadow (much like with Mirifique, be sure to dab the color on gently). Last, but not least, we’re going to use the Inked in Pink shadow as a highlighter to brighten up the corners of the eyes. Apply Inked in Pink to the inner upper and bottom corner of the eyes — creating a horizontal V — to brighten up the corners and draw light to the look. Finish the look off with mascara, falsies or both.
Face
When it comes to foundation, we recommend something with light coverage and highlighting pigments that will give you a dewy finish. We recommend Burt’s Bees BB Cream for even, glowing skin. After applying foundation, apply your trusted concealer. This is best done once you’ve finished your eye makeup to clean up excess eyeshadow that may have fallen onto your face. With a small tapered brush, take a cream bronzer (we recommend Sonia Kashuk Undetectable Cream Bronzer) to lightly contour the cheeks; then take a large brush to buff it out. Set your cream bronzer with a powder contour (Anastasia Beverly Hills Contour pans) by applying product in large, round strokes.
Next you’re going to lightly apply blush on the apples of your cheeks for a youthful glow and finish the look with highlighter on the cheekbones. Our favorite drugstore highlighter of the moment is Revlon’s Photoready Skinlights in Pink. Lightly brush this highlighter on for a lit-from-within glow. After you’ve applied your highlighter, set your makeup with a finishing powder. Our go-to setting powder is Tarte’s Smooth Operator Pressed Finishing Powder. Keep the powder light by barely dusting it on the forehead, down the bridge of the nose and chin.
Lips
For the lips, we’re using Rimmel’s Exaggerate Lip Liner in Epic and Long Lasting Lipstick in Airy Fairy. Simply line the lips with Epic, swipe on some Airy Fairy, blend and you’re done!
